About Parai:

Parai is one of the oldest indigenous percussion instruments of Tamil culture. Typically made of a shallow wooden frame with an animal-hide membrane, it is played with two sticks, one longer and one shorter and is often worn over the shoulder while playing and moving. Historically, the parai was used for announcements, gathering people, and in ritual or festival settings; it also features in Parai Attam (parai dance), combining movement and rhythm. Over time, the instrument and its players have become tightly bound up with issues of caste, identity and revival of folk arts.

About Sakthi Ravanan

Our Parai notest are provided by Sakthi Ravanan. He is a contemporary practitioner, educator, and promoter of parai music. Born in Vellalur in Coimbatore district, Tamil Nadu, he has more than 15 years of experience in the folk percussion arts, especially in parai and thudumbu (a related rhythm tradition). sakthiravanan.com

Sakthi is the founder and chief trainer of Nimirvu Kalaiyagam / Nimirvu Parai School (also referred to as a “Parai Music School”) and shares his teaching through in-person sessions, online classes, and video-based lessons under the branding “பறை கற்போம்” (“Learn Parai”).
