தளிர் – தமிழ் விதை, தலைமுறைகளின் மரபு
“தன் தாய்மொழியை கற்றுக்கொள்ளாதவன், தனது பண்பாட்டையும், பாரம்பரியத்தையும், வேர்களையும்—இறுதியில் தன்னையுமே இழந்துவிடுகிறான்” என்ற ஆழமான பதிவு அனைவருக்கும் நினைவூட்டலாக இருக்கிறது.
2004ஆம் ஆண்டு நான் இலண்டனுக்கு குடிபெயர்ந்த போது, இந்த உண்மையை காணத் தொடங்கினேன். நமது தமிழ் குழந்தைகள் பலர் தமிழ் பேசாமல் வளர்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். தங்கள் பாரம்பரியத்தை அறியாமலும், தாய்மொழியால் வரும் அந்தச் சேர்ந்துணர்வு இன்றி வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். “ஏதாவது செய்ய வேண்டும்” என்று பலமுறை எண்ணினேன். ஆனால் காலம் சென்றது , வாழ்க்கை தனது பாதையில் சென்றுகொண்டே இருந்தது.
எனது குழந்தைகளே அதே பாதையில் சென்று கொண்டிருப்பதை உணர்ந்த தருணம் வந்தது. அவர்கள் தமிழ் பேசுவதில் குறைந்து, வேர்களுடன் தொடர்பு இழந்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். அந்த நிமிடம் என்னை ஆழமாகக் குலைத்தது. அது எனக்குப் புரியவைத்தது—இப்போதே இல்லை என்றால் ஒருபோதும் இல்லை.
அப்படியே 2019இல், என் மனைவி ஷர்மியின் உறுதியான ஆதரவும், என் நண்பரும் ஆசிரியருமான சுஜாதாவின் அர்ப்பணிப்பும் இணைந்து, தளிர் தமிழ் கல்விக்கூடத்தின் முதல் விதையை நாங்கள் விதைத்தோம். அப்போது எங்களிடம் இருந்தது—19 தளிர் குழந்தைகள், இரண்டு வகுப்பறைகள், சில உற்சாகமிக்க ஆசிரியர்கள் மட்டுமே.
ஆனால் எங்கள் கனவு பெரியது. அடுத்த தலைமுறைக்கு தமிழ் மொழியையும் பண்பாட்டையும் கற்பிப்பது மட்டுமல்ல, பண்புகள், ஒற்றுமை, சேர்ந்துணர்வு ஆகியவற்றையும் வளர்ப்பதே எங்கள் நோக்கம். பாடப் புத்தகங்களைத் தாண்டி, எங்கள் குழந்தைகள் திருக்குறள், ஆத்திசூடி போன்ற காலத்தைக் கடக்கும் ஞானத்தை கற்றனர். பொங்கல் விழா போன்ற கலாசார நிகழ்வுகளின் மூலம் தமிழ் பாரம்பரியத்தை கொண்டாடினர்.
அந்த எளிய தொடக்கத்திலிருந்து, ஆண்டுதோறும் தளிர் செழித்துக் கொண்டே வந்தது. 2024க்குள், தளிர் 125 குழந்தைகள், 10 வகுப்பறைகள், 20 தன்னார்வ ஆசிரியர்கள், 10 அர்ப்பணிப்பு மிக்க உதவி பணியாளர்களுடன் உயிர்த்துடிக்கும் சமூகமாக மலர்ந்தது.
இன்று நாம் விதைக்கும் தமிழ் விதை, நாளைய நமது தளிர் குழந்தைகளின் இதயங்களில் ஆழமாக வேரூன்றும் என்பதில் எங்களுக்கு முழு நம்பிக்கை உள்ளது. அது அவர்களை ஒன்றிணைத்து, நமது தமிழ் மொழி மற்றும் பண்பாட்டை உயிரோடு வைத்துக்கொண்டு, அவர்கள் யார் என்பதில் பெருமை கொள்ளச் செய்யும் - "தமிழன் என்று சொல்லடா தலை நிமிர்த்து நில்லடா".

Thalir – A Seed of Tamil, A Legacy for Generations
There is a powerful saying: “One who doesn’t learn their mother tongue, loses their culture, tradition, roots—and eventually, who they are.”
When I moved to London in 2004, I slowly began to witness this reality. Children in our community were growing up without speaking Tamil, without knowing their traditions, and without the sense of identity that comes from one’s mother tongue. For years, I thought of doing something, but time passed, and life went on.
The turning point came when I realized my own children were walking the same path. Speaking less Tamil, connecting less with their roots. That moment shook me deeply. I knew it was now or never.
In 2019, with the support of my wife Sharmi and friend & teacher Sujatha, We planted the first seed of Thalir Thamizh Kalvikoodam. We began with just 19 children, a couple of classrooms, and a handful of passionate teachers.
Our vision was simple yet profound: to teach Tamil language and culture to the next generation, while also nurturing values, unity, and a sense of belonging. Beyond language lessons, our children learned from the timeless wisdom of Thirukkural and Aathichoodi, and celebrated Tamil traditions through cultural activities like the Pongal festival.
From those humble beginnings, we have grown year by year. By 2024, Thalir had blossomed into a vibrant community of:

10 classrooms
20 teaching volunteers
10 dedicated support staff
We strongly believe that the Tamil seed we plant today will grow deep in the hearts of our children—keeping them united, keeping our language and culture alive, and helping them carry forward the pride of knowing who they are and what they are.
